Born and raised in Bermuda to a seafaring family of Haywards and Fox’s(Tommy Fox, Bermuda)
At age 9/10 he crewed on a Snipe class racing sailboat with an uncle and won club junior championships at ages 10, 11 and 12 in the St. Georges Dingy and Sports Club, Bermuda.
By age 14 he achieved a certificate from Bermuda Tech for Charting and Navigation.
By age 16, he had achieved a Certificate for Celestial Navigation.
During high school, he worked summers on a 60’ research boat and then a 128’ research ship out of Bermuda. At age 17 after high school acting 3 rd mate on the 128’ research ship SIR HORACE LAMB for Columbia University Research Field Station. The ship during WWII was built in Seattle, WA in 1943 and named YMS 294.
He graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in Economics before working with 2 management consulting firms.
He gave up the traveling consulting jobs and married Marie in 1977, bought a Ranger 32 and raced it very successfully out of Marblehead and Boston until 1980, when he raced it in the Marion/Bermuda race.
In 1977, David and Marie started New England Marine Documentation Services as a result of complicated issues in buying the Ranger 32. With the success of New England Marine, they felt offering marine insurance to their documentation clients would be a natural, and it was. So, in 1985, the Admiralty Insurance Agency was created.
In 1986, under pressure from a national marine lender, they opened a branch of New England Marine at Marina Village, Alameda, CA.
David bought and restored a 1973 58’ Hatteras Tricabin GLASS EAGLE, which he lives on and enjoys.(youtube: glass eagle yacht) Unfortunately, he has put GLASS EAGLE on the market for sale after a 14-year rebuild.
David also owns a Ranger 26-2 TOYPEDO and races it in the Alameda estuary, mostly the Oakland and Encinal Yacht Clubs twilight races Fast forward, today, David has closed New England Marine Title and has joined the sales team at Richard Boland Yacht Sales in Alameda, CA. Why Richard Boland Yachts? He replied, “I respect Richard for both his moral and ethical approach to life as it aligns perfectly with my own”!
